Pliny the Younger documented that, in 79 AD, a famous eruption of the Mt. Vesuvius volcano buried the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, first in ash, then in multiple pyroclastic flows. Workmen rediscovered Pompeii in 1599, but reburied it under orders from the supervising architect. Workmen discovered Herculaneum in 1738, while digging foundations for the king's summer palace.
